Vietnam is home to automotive and aerospace suppliers, and is considered a prime location for electronics manufacturing services. Standard Chartered anticipates that Vietnam will remain the fastest-growing ASEAN economy throughout 2018 with a robust GDP growth of 7.0%. The growth is driven by strong FDI-supported electronics manufacturing and rising consumption. Manufacturing is likely to remain the primary growth drivers in the second half of the year.

According to the latest macro-economic research report, electronics export growth is likely to stay robust, leading to a trade surplus and supporting overall growth. The Bank expresses its views that FDI inflows will stay strong in 2018 and 2019-20, with registered capital of close to USD 17 billion each year, and FDI inflows to the manufacturing sector, particularly electronics manufacturing, will remain high in the medium term.

According to Đào Quang Vinh, director of the Institute of Labour Science and Social Affairs(ILSSA) at the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA), electronics is the largest export sector of Vietnam. The sector’s export turnover has grown from USD 22.9 billion in 2012 to more than USD 71 billion in 2017. It is now 2.5 times and 5 times greater than textiles and footwear sectors, respectively. Of the total, 95 percent of the country’s electronic export turnover is due to foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises.

Samsung Electronics’ factories in Vietnam produce almost one third of the firm’s global output. So far, Samsung has invested a cumulative US$17 billion in the country. On October 30th, during a meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in Hanoi, Samsung Electronics vice chairman Lee Jae-yong promised to make long-term investment in Vietnam. Lee cited that the development of Vietnamese parts suppliers and the rise in parts localization ratio is exactly what the company expects. He added that Samsung is not only focusing on production investment in Vietnam but also investing in R&D in Vietnam and working with Vietnamese companies in the field of manpower and parts supply.
